Răzvan Costache, Managing Director

The importance of human resources when performing a quality translation, be it a specialized text or conference interpreting, is rarely taken into account by LSPs (Language Service Providers).

Here at Avalon we have always tried to improve the level of competencies of our freelancers (vendors), in-house and project based staff. Many years ago, when the business started we focused on young university graduates who benefited from in-depth training programmes aimed at improving their language, translation and project management skills in a corporate environment while experiencing the new translation related technology.

Back in 2003, in Romania, besides Avalon there was probably only one other LSP using a CAT Tool (Computer Aided Translation Tool) in their activity. Now almost all providers use at least one of the many tools easily available on the market, mainly because clients ask for such solutions and also because vendors (freelancers) are more technology oriented than 18 years ago. Freelancers are also aware of the many benefits CAT Tools bring, from consistency to respecting their clients instructions.

The word goes by that Avalon was at the time “a Trados training centre”. Keeping true to our name of training centre we have continued over the years to offer training both to in-house staff and also to our vendors. Online and face to face presentations to in-house staff and freelancers on familiar topics such us CAT Tool troubleshooting and Quality Assurance were a common occurrence until 2011.

In 2011, while celebrating its 10th year in business, Avalon organized a fully fledged Vendor Training Day. Twenty participants and three main topics (CAT Tools Troubleshooting, Quality Assurance Issues and Project Management Workflow) made the day an immense success. Participants had the chance to socialize, during the event, and also later that evening in an informal environment in a pub. This also contributed to the success of the event so we will definitely repeat it in 2012.

Please visit the new Avalon website at http://www.avalon.ro/gallery/photo-gallery/ for a photo account of the event.

I had the pleasure of working with Avalon Media on a time sensitive project which required translation of two language pairs, both on a super-tight deadline. What impressed me was the speed at which the work was turned around, as well as care shown by Avalon to getting it right. Not only were they immediately responsive to my requests, they went above and beyond in making sure the entire exercise ran smoothly. I would definitely recommend them.
